How Tommy and I Met
I was really surprised by how many of you asked for this! Its not the romantic he left his number on a napkin at a bar story, or we locked eyes across the room at a café, he just slid into my DM’s.
I tend to get quite a few DM’s from a wide spectrum of men. Some famous with their blue badge, some who have a wife and children (this is particularly disturbing), and some I think hay, he’s kind of cute maybe I’ll reply to his message and see what happens. Tommy was in category three, we had mutual friends and he definitely wasn’t sore on the eyes. We messaged from time to time but nothing ever eventuated.
About six months from our first conversation, I was at the beach with a girlfriend and her friend Jack, who happened to be friends with Tommy. Without me knowing, Jack messaged Tommy to get down to the beach to meet him because I was there. I never knew this message was sent, so when he rocked up to the beach I thought it was all a coincidence.
I can honestly say there was a very instant connection between us. Tommy was confident which I find so attractive in a man. He set up his towel next to me and we chatted and laughed a lot. I felt like I had known this guy my whole life.
I had to leave for a shoot not too long after he arrived. As I left, Tommy asked me if I wanted to go for a margarita next week. I can’t remember my response, but I know I was very excited about the potential. When I left, my friend messaged me saying that Tommy said to her “I’m going to marry that girl”. This still gives me goosebumps thinking about it (I’ve never told Tommy that my friend said told me this! - secrets out).
That evening, Tommy messaged me wanting to organise our first date. We decided to go for dinner and drinks the following week and it was the best date I have ever been on. The conversation just flowed, we were drinking margaritas, having shots of tequila and eating tacos – it was the perfect combination of getting to know each other, whilst also just having a really good time.
With Tommy, there were no waiting games. From our first date, we were messaging all the time. We decided to hang out again the next night. I went over for take out sushi and wine, and we shared our first kiss. Tommy was leaving the next day to the Gold Coast to spend Christmas, and then to Byron Bay for New Years. In my head, all I could think was that this was the worst timing. I thought he would meet someone else in the two weeks we wouldn’t see each other, but he surprised me and asked if I wanted to meet him in Byron.
At first I thought he was joking. We had only been on two dates and had really only known each other a week. I told him no to protect myself.
Whilst he was in the Gold Coast we continued to message constantly, face timing twice a day. He would even send me videos of him at Christmas with his family. I started to believe in this, and that this guy wasn’t going to be the usual f**k boy I was used to.
I decided to take the risk, and booked a flight to Byron. I remember that feeling I had as I got on the plane on my way to meet him. It was a mixture of nerves and excitement.
When I got off the plane and was waiting for my baggage, two big hands covered my eyes, I looked around and it was him. I remember feeling a little lost for words, as reality was sinking in and I had committed to a weekend away with someone I barely knew. On the drive from Ballina Airport to Byron, the nerves started to subside as Tommy’s warm nature made me feel at ease.
We had the best weekend together. I met his brother and all of his friends. Taking that risk was the best thing I have ever done. I can’t express enough that when you know, you know. We happened really fast, but I wouldn’t change a single thing.
